HIV Information

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the virus that that causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). AIDS is a very serious disease that decreases a person’s ability to resist other infections. Two of the most common ways that HIV is spread are through unprotected sex and the sharing of needles. If you are concerned that you might have contracted HIV it is very important to get tested as soon as possible. Currently there is not a cure for HIV but early detection and treatment are helping people infected with HIV and AIDS live longer and more manageable lives.

According to the CDC, 1 out of every 5 people living with HIV does not know they are infected. We recommend you get tested for HIV if you answer “Yes” to any of these questions:

  1. Have you had multiple sexual partners?
  2. Have you had sex with a person who already is or might be HIV positive?
  3. Have you or anyone else (besides a medical professional) used needles to inject yourself with drugs or steroids?
  4. Do you have or have you had another sexually transmitted disease?
  5. Have you had sex with anyone who would answer “Yes” to any of the questions above?
  6. Have you had sex with anyone who you do not know how they would answer the questions above?
